The demand for English-speaking teachers abroad is simply enormous. It is estimated that of the 250,000 English teachers working overseas, almost half will return or move on to another country each year, with as many as 100,000 vacancies opening up.

Most of the demand comes from community and private schools, dedicated English-language schools, universities and businesses based predominantly in Asia and some European countries. Indeed, China, South Korea, Thailand and Japan are particular hotspots. South Korea alone is estimated to have 24,000 English-speaking teachers working there.

Demand is also high in Europe, with Turkey, Spain and several Central European states all seeking to attract English-speaking teachers from abroad.

For many states, demand has never been greater. Increased globalisation and the widening use of English as the world’s language of business has prompted the need for more English-speaking teachers, which has recently resulted in a record number of applications.
